In the heart of Bedford-Stuyvesant, the annual STooPS Festival transforms local stoops and sidewalks into vibrant stages, celebrating the neighborhood's rich cultural heritage.
Kendra J. Ross, founder and director of STooPS, emphasizes the festival's mission: "We aim to highlight, amplify, and honor the traditions of Bed-Stuy voices and people."
For over a decade, STooPS has been a driving force in bridging art and community, offering live performances, wellness workshops, and educational programs, often at little to no cost.
Ross adds, "STooPS is community. It's connection, it's art, and it's love—because you gotta spread love, it's the Brooklyn way."
Beyond performances, the festival offers guided tours through Bed-Stuy's storied past, serving as living tributes to the neighborhood's legacy.
Pia Monique Murat, creative director of STooPS, notes, "STooPS is bringing all of that history back. If you think that's valuable, come out and support, so we can continue to provide it."
Looking ahead, STooPS plans pop-up events for the holidays and the Black Futures Festival in February 2026, in collaboration with the Brooklyn Children's Museum.
Ross encourages community involvement: "We have an incredible team of teaching artists. Through our education and curation programs, we can bring some STooPS magic to you."
