Greenpoint's Beloved Pencil Factory Bar to Reopen Under New Ownership |
After nearly a quarter-century as a cornerstone of Greenpoint's nightlife, the Pencil Factory Bar faced closure in July 2025 when its lease was not renewed.
However, the cherished establishment at 142 Franklin Street is set for a revival, thanks to new owners Tony Ismail and David Doyle.
Ismail, known for his Lebanese café Café Alula just blocks away, and Doyle, the proprietor of Williamsburg's Café Balearica, have joined forces to breathe new life into the iconic bar.
While specific plans for the space remain under wraps, the duo has expressed a commitment to preserving the bar's essence.
Ismail emphasized their vision: "It's gonna be really neighborhood, local people who come and feel comfortable, feeling like they're home."
Patrons can anticipate the continuation of the beloved outdoor seating area, a staple for community gatherings.
Additionally, the introduction of televisions aims to cater to sports enthusiasts, though the establishment will not transform into a traditional sports bar.
The new owners are currently awaiting liquor license approval, with hopes to reopen the doors by November or December.
As Greenpoint continues to evolve, the revival of the Pencil Factory Bar stands as a testament to the community's dedication to preserving its unique character and cherished local spots. |
